TRICARE Oral Surgery Coverage

If you serve in the military or are part of a military family, understanding how your TRICARE benefits apply to oral surgery can feel like navigating a maze. The good news is that TRICARE does provide meaningful coverage for a range of oral surgery procedures, and knowing how to use those benefits can make a real difference in your care and your costs. Learning what is and is not covered under your plan before you schedule a procedure puts you in the best position to move forward with confidence.

At Goodove Oral Surgery & Dental Implants, we are proud to be in-network with TRICARE, making it easier for military families in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake to access the care they need. As an independent practice that has stayed true to its roots while many competitors have gone corporate, we work hand-in-hand with our patients to help maximize reimbursement for covered procedures.

Our knowledgeable staff is well-informed on insurance coverage and ready to guide you through the process from your very first call. If you are a veteran receiving care through VA benefits, we coordinate directly with the VA Community Care Network as well.

What TRICARE Covers for Oral Surgery

TRICARE distinguishes between dental care and medical care, and this distinction matters when it comes to oral surgery. Certain procedures are classified as medical care rather than dental care under TRICARE, which means they may be covered under your medical plan rather than the TRICARE Dental Program (TDP).

According to TRICARE’s covered services guidelines, medically classified oral surgery procedures include the following:

  • Excision of tumors and cysts: removal of tumors and cysts from the jaws, cheeks, lips, tongue, and the roof or floor of the mouth when the conditions require a pathological examination
  • Treatment of accidental injuries: oral surgical procedures to correct injuries to the jaws, cheeks, lips, tongue, and surrounding oral structures resulting from accidents
  • Correction of jaw irregularities: surgical correction of prognathism, micrognathism, and congenital craniofacial conditions
  • Removal of foreign bodies: extraction of foreign objects that pose a health risk or complicate a primary medical condition

Because each case is evaluated individually, it is always important to verify your specific coverage before scheduling a procedure.

Understanding the TRICARE Dental Program

Beyond medical coverage, the TRICARE Dental Program (TDP) is a voluntary, premium-based plan that provides access to a wide range of dental services, including oral surgery and tooth extractions. Cost-shares vary depending on your status, pay grade, and location, with an annual service maximum of $1,500 per person, per contract year. Preauthorization may be required for certain specialty procedures, so confirming coverage details in advance is always a smart step.

Active Duty vs. Non-Active Duty Coverage

Active duty service members receive dental benefits directly through their military service, while family members and retirees who want dental coverage must enroll in a plan such as the TDP. If you have a dental-related medical condition, injury, or disease, coverage may also be available under your medical plan, though preauthorization is typically required. Our patient information resources are available to help you work through these steps so nothing falls through the cracks.

Oral Surgery Procedures We Provide

Our team performs a comprehensive range of oral surgery services that may qualify for TRICARE coverage depending on your plan and medical necessity. From wisdom teeth removal to dental implants and bone grafting, we bring focused surgical care to every procedure we perform. Our doctors also hold operating privileges at several local facilities, including Virginia Beach Ambulatory Surgery Center, Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center, and Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters, providing patients access to care in a setting suited to their individual needs.

Our surgical staff is highly trained, CPR certified, and committed to providing a genuinely caring environment for every patient. Whether you need a minor extraction or a more involved procedure, you can count on warm, attentive care and close monitoring throughout your visit with us.

Our Doctors Understand Military Life

At Goodove Oral Surgery, the connection to the military is personal. Dr. Peter Zagursky is a retired Army veteran who has experienced firsthand what it means to serve and to depend on care that is efficient, no-nonsense, and delivered with respect. That background shapes the way our entire practice operates. Our team does not overcomplicate things, does not hide behind corporate red tape, and does not make you feel like a number. When you come in as a TRICARE patient, you are treated by people who understand the culture you come from and genuinely appreciate your service.

That military-rooted mindset extends beyond Dr. Zagursky. Our practice has long been a go-to resource for the Hampton Roads military community, and the relationships we have built with service members, retirees, and their families over the years reflect a shared sense of trust and accountability. You will find that our doctors are accessible, direct, and personally invested in your outcome in a way that is hard to find at larger, corporate-run practices.
