Finding the right oral surgeon is one of the most important decisions you can make for your long-term oral health. Whether you’re dealing with problematic wisdom teeth, considering dental implants, or navigating a referral from your general dentist, you want someone who will treat you with genuine care, not hand you off to a rotating roster of providers. Portsmouth is one of the Hampton Roads areas we serve.

Goodove Oral Surgery & Dental Implants has been a trusted name throughout the Hampton Roads region, serving Portsmouth patients from two convenient locations in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake. We are an independently owned practice, which means our focus stays where it belongs: on you and the outcomes you need. Patients from Portsmouth regularly make the short trip across the water to work with our board-certified oral surgeons, and we’ve built lasting relationships with referring general dentists throughout the region because we take that trust seriously.

What Sets an Oral Surgeon Apart

When your dentist refers you to an oral surgeon, it’s because your care requires a higher level of surgical training and precision. Our procedures range from complex tooth extractions to full-arch implant restorations, the kind of advanced work that goes well beyond what a general dentist’s office is designed to handle.

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons complete dental school followed by a minimum of four additional years in a hospital-based surgical residency, training alongside physicians in general surgery, anesthesiology, and other medical disciplines. According to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, that extensive background uniquely qualifies OMSs to diagnose and treat a broad range of functional and aesthetic conditions involving the face, jaw, and mouth. At Goodove Oral Surgery & Dental Implants, both of our surgeons hold dual board certifications, which reflects a genuine commitment to clinical excellence.

It’s also worth noting that not all oral surgery practices are the same. Corporate dental chains often prioritize volume over the kind of patient-centered attention that leads to truly great outcomes. We chose to remain independent because we believe the best care comes from a team that knows you, communicates openly, and has a real stake in your results.

Oral Surgery Services for Portsmouth Patients

We offer a comprehensive range of oral surgical procedures and welcome patients from Portsmouth and throughout Hampton Roads. Each treatment plan is personalized based on your dental history, health status, and goals.

Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth removal is one of the most commonly referred procedures, and timing often matters. Impacted or partially erupted wisdom teeth can cause infection, crowding, and damage to neighboring teeth when left untreated. We evaluate each case carefully, using cone beam CT imaging when appropriate to plan the safest, most efficient extraction possible.

Dental Implants and Bone Grafting

Missing teeth affects more than your appearance. They can lead to bone loss and shifting of surrounding teeth over time. Dental implants are the closest thing to a natural tooth replacement available, and placing them successfully requires the kind of surgical precision our team brings to every case. We work closely with your restorative dentist to ensure a seamless process from implant placement through final crown.

Many patients who have experienced tooth loss also require bone grafting before implants can be placed. Socket preservation and ridge augmentation procedures help maintain bone volume and set the foundation for a lasting, successful implant outcome.

Oral Pathology

Unusual tissue changes in the mouth, lips, or throat should never be ignored. Oral pathology evaluations and biopsies are an important part of what we do, helping to identify conditions early when they’re most treatable. If your dentist has noted something out of the ordinary, a prompt referral to an oral surgeon is the appropriate and recommended next step.

Hospital Privileges and Accessible Care

Our surgeons hold hospital privileges at Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center, Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters (CHKD), and Virginia Beach Ambulatory Surgery Center. That level of access allows us to provide care across a range of settings, including hospital-based procedures for patients with complex medical or anesthetic needs.

We’ve also made it a priority to work with a broad range of insurance plans, so cost is never a barrier to getting the care you need. We accept most major PPO plans, Medicaid, Medicare Advantage, TRICARE, Veterans Affairs (VA) coverage, and Logistic Health for veterans. For patients without insurance, CareCredit and Cherry Financing are both available to help make treatment accessible.
